On 7 October, US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a net outflow of $484.9M. Spot Ethereum ETFs lost another $160.9M. Combined, that's $645.8M that left regulated crypto custody in a single day -- real cash, not a leverage proxy, reported by the issuers themselves and aggregated by farside.co.uk. I pulled our ETF flow history back two weeks to put that number in context, and it isn't close: the next-worst combined day in that window was -$208.3M on 30 September. Yesterday was more than three times worse than anything else we'd tracked.
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 Sep | - 148,7M $ | - 59,6 M $ | - 208,3M $ |
| 5 octobre | - 89,8 M $ | - 50,8 M $ | - 140,6M $ |
| 6 oct | + 118,8 M $ | - 201,9 M $ | - 83,1 M $ |
| 7 octobre | - 484,9M $ | - 160,9 M $ | - 645,8M $ |
Broken down by issuer, the Bitcoin side wasn't one fund panicking -- it was broad. IBIT led at -$207.7M, FBTC at -$105.1M, ARKB at -$101.7M, GBTC at -$39.3M, BITB at -$27.6M, HODL at -$3.5M. On the Ethereum side it was more concentrated: ETHA alone accounted for -$116.1M of the -$160.9M total, with ETHE adding -$25.8M. When the flagship fund from the biggest issuer (IBIT) is also the single largest outflow line, that's not a rotation between products. That's money leaving the asset class through the regulated door.
Here's the part that doesn't add up cleanly. If $645.8M in spot money is heading for the exit, you'd expect perp markets to flinch -- basis to go more negative as leveraged longs get nervous, or long/short ratios to compress as the crowd de-risks. Neither happened, at least not yet. Our live basis tracker has BTC perps at -0.05% to spot and ETH at -0.04% -- both already slightly negative before this outflow, both basically unchanged by it. And our long/short tracker still shows the crowd leaning hard long: BTC global accounts at 64.8% long (a 1.85:1 ratio), ETH at 77.1% long (3.36:1). That ETH number in particular is wide. Three in four tracked ETH accounts are net long on the exact day a large chunk of institutional ETH money walked out through the regulated door.
None of this means the two markets have to agree. ETF flows are a daily, lagging snapshot of institutional allocation decisions. Perp positioning is a live, continuously-repriced bet on the next few hours or days. They're allowed to diverge for a while. But a gap this size -- the worst flow day we've tracked, sitting next to a long/short ratio that's actually a bit more crowded-long than normal for ETH -- is exactly the setup where the catch-up move, when it comes, tends to be fast. If spot sentiment is genuinely souring and perp positioning hasn't adjusted, the adjustment gets done by liquidations instead of by orders.
