What "decentralized" actually removes: counterparty risk
The pitch for trading on a DEX instead of a centralized exchange is usually some version of "safer." That's vague enough to be misleading. Here's the specific thing it's true about:
On a CEX, your balance is an entry in the exchange's internal database. You've handed over your funds and you hold a claim against the exchange — a claim that's only as good as the exchange's solvency and honesty. FTX in November 2022 is the reference case: customer deposits, which users believed were sitting untouched, had been commingled with Alameda Research's trading positions. When Alameda's bets went bad, the money wasn't there. Depositors didn't lose it trading — they lost it because the custodian was insolvent.
On a decentralized perp exchange, your margin sits in a smart contract, not an exchange's balance sheet. There's no entity that can quietly move it into a bad trade on your behalf, because there's no entity in custody of it. That's the entire mechanism, and it's real: DEX trading structurally can't reproduce an FTX-style event, because the specific failure — a custodian losing or misusing funds it was only supposed to hold — requires a custodian.
What it doesn't touch: leverage and liquidation
This is the part that gets skipped in "DEX = safe" marketing. Self-custody changes who holds your funds. It does not change what happens when a leveraged position moves against you. Maintenance margin, liquidation price and forced closure work off the same math everywhere — 10x leverage still liquidates you around a ~10% adverse move whether the venue is centralized or not. Nothing about "decentralized" makes leverage forgiving.
If anything, some DEX designs make liquidation more mechanically exposed, not less: liquidations trigger off an on-chain oracle price feed rather than an internal mark-price system, and in thin liquidity that feed can move harder and faster than the price you'd see on a deep CEX order book. Decentralization is a custody property. It says nothing about your maintenance margin.
The risk it adds back: smart contracts and oracles
Removing counterparty risk doesn't mean removing risk — it means trading it for a different kind. A DEX's smart contract code and price oracle become the new trust boundary. A well-audited protocol with years of live volume and no incidents is a very different bet than a brand-new one, and that's true across DeFi broadly, not specific to any one platform: oracle-manipulation exploits (a bad actor moving the price a contract reads from, then trading against it) have drained nine-figure sums from DeFi protocols before. It's a different failure mode than an exchange going insolvent, but it's not a smaller category of risk by default — it depends entirely on the specific protocol's maturity, audit history and how its oracle is designed.
How to actually think about the choice
Not "DEX is safe, CEX is risky." More precisely: which risk would you rather hold?
- CEX: counterparty/insolvency risk (the exchange could fail or misuse funds) — the FTX/Mt. Gox failure mode.
- DEX: smart-contract/oracle risk (the code or price feed could be exploited) — a newer, less historically tested failure mode that varies a lot by protocol.
- Both: full leverage and liquidation risk, unchanged either way — this is on you regardless of venue.
