I keep a full snapshot of every Binance USDT-margined perpetual's funding rate β€” 851 of them this morning. I was sorting it for the usual reasons: which coin pays the most to be short, which pays the most to be long. What stopped me was a different column. I grouped the sheet by rate instead of ranking it, and 293 coins β€” 34.4% of the entire list β€” showed exactly 0.5000%. Not close. Identical, out to four decimal places. XTZUSDT, a coin that's been trading since 2018, sat at the same 0.5000% as GIGGLEUSDT, a listing from a few weeks ago. So did USTCUSDT, PIXELUSDT and 290 others.

Then I checked the rest of the sheet. 265 more coins β€” 31.1% β€” read exactly 0.0000%. Add the two groups and 65.6% of every tradable perpetual on the exchange is showing one of two round numbers this morning. Only 293 coins (34.4%, coincidentally the same count as the capped group) show a rate that looks like it came from an actual market.

It isn't a cap β€” the real numbers blow past it

My first assumption was a hard funding-rate cap at Β±0.50%. Binance does cap some pairs. But the live sheet rules that out immediately: OPUSDT reads 1.0000% this morning, twice the supposed ceiling. ADAUSDT reads 0.8153%. On the negative side it's worse β€” 77 coins sit below -0.50%, with ASTRUSDT at -1.2105% and CVCUSDT at -0.6189%, both well past where a symmetric Β±0.5% floor would stop them. Whatever 0.5000% is, it isn't a rail the exchange is bouncing prices off. Real, liquid pairs trade straight through it in both directions.

What the 0.5000% and 0.0000% groups actually look like

The 0.0000% group isn't just thin meme coins. TONUSDT β€” a top-30 market cap coin β€” reads exactly zero this morning, same as a run of tokenized single-stock perpetuals I recognized from an earlier post: GOOGLUSDT, DDOGUSDT, LLYUSDT, SAMSUNGEMUSDT. The 0.5000% group is the same story from the other side: alongside the obvious new listings (KITEUSDT, SOMIUSDT, TREEUSDT) sits XTZUSDT, seven years into trading. Neither group sorts cleanly by "new" or "small." What they share isn't age or size β€” it's that whatever mechanism computes their funding rate isn't finding a real, independent premium to report.

The pattern I'd expect if that's right: pairs where actual order-book depth is too thin to generate a trustworthy premium index fall back to a default value instead of a computed one β€” 0.5000% in one branch of that logic, 0.0000% (typically brand-new listings with no funding history yet) in the other. I can't see Binance's internals to confirm that's the exact mechanism, and I said as much the last time I found a similar rounding pattern in a completely different dataset β€” that post was about a 10.95% ceiling across 5 exchanges on 433 coins, a different number, a different cause, and worth reading as the companion piece to this one. What I can confirm directly from today's sheet: the coins with real depth β€” BTCUSDT at 0.4934%, ETHUSDT at -0.1525%, SOLUSDT at -0.1780%, XRPUSDT at -0.2481% β€” all show non-round numbers, every single one, because their order books have enough real trading to generate a distinct premium every 8 hours.

Why this matters before you check a rate

If you open a perpetual you don't trade often and its funding rate reads a suspiciously clean 0.5000% or 0.0000%, don't treat it as market sentiment. On today's data there's better than a 1-in-3 chance that number isn't measuring anything about that specific coin at all β€” it's a fallback value assigned because the pair doesn't have the liquidity to generate a real one. BTC's -0.1525% ETH or -0.1780% SOL, by contrast, are numbers you can actually trust as a read on crowding, because thousands of real trades built them this morning. Check the live number for whatever you're holding on the live funding rates page before trusting it either way, and if you're carrying a position that pays or costs funding, run the real cost through the funding calculator or the funding rate APR calculator β€” a default value compounding for a week is exactly as expensive as a real one, even if it isn't telling you anything about the market.
