Why exchange fees hit harder than they look

The headline rate is on notional, not your margin. At 10× leverage a $100 position controls $1,000 of notional. A 0.055% taker fee is $0.55 per side — $1.10 to open and close — 1.1% of your margin before the market moves a cent.

At 20 round trips a week (a moderate active trader) that's 80 trades a month. Across a year: 960 trades. The difference between 0.055% and 0.05% taker is small per trade — but across 960 trades on $1,000 notional it's $48 a year purely from the fee gap. Multiply by leverage and trade size.

The bigger lever is order type. Limit/maker orders on all major exchanges are 0.02% — less than half the taker rate. Patient traders who post limit orders and get filled pay dramatically less. The calculator above shows the exact savings.

VIP tiers: when volume unlocks real discounts

ExchangeTier 0 takerVIP 1 takerVolume for VIP 1

Binance0.050%0.040%$5M / 30d

KuCoin0.060%0.045%$1M / 30d
Bitget0.051%0.040%$5M / 30d

At high volume OKX's VIP discount is the steepest (0.05% → 0.03%). KuCoin reaches VIP 1 on the lowest volume threshold.

The full picture: beyond the exchange fee

Exchange fees are the visible cost. Funding (paid every 8h on perps), spread, and slippage are invisible on the ticket but real. Use the true trade cost calculator to see all four together. Use fee drag to see how costs compound on an account over time.
