Sats make Bitcoin countable
Whole BTC feels out of reach; sats make it approachable and precise. Convert any amount to dollars here, then check fees on the Bitcoin transaction fee tool.
Why count in sats
One bitcoin is 100,000,000 satoshis. When BTC trades at $100,000, one sat is exactly $0.001 — a tenth of a cent. Pricing things in sats matters for two groups: people stacking small amounts who want to see their total grow in round numbers, and anyone using Lightning, where invoices are denominated in sats, period.
The mental shortcut worth memorizing: at $100k per BTC, $1 = 1,000 sats. At $50k, $1 = 2,000 sats. Double the price, halve the sats per dollar.
A common mixup is confusing sats with bits. A bit is 100 sats — an older unit that mostly died out. If someone quotes you "5,000 bits" they mean 500,000 sats. Lightning wallets occasionally still show bits, which has caused people to think an invoice was 100× smaller than it was.
