Our cross-exchange funding feed pulls rates for 1,892 perp pairs across bybit, binance, bitget, gate, mexc, okx and Hyperliquid every snapshot. Sorting today's snapshot (6 November, 04:00 UTC) by the widest same-coin, cross-exchange funding spread, the top result is AGPU: bybit at 0.940%, binance at 0.612%, gate at 0.353%, bitget at 0.018% -- all per 8-hour interval. Annualized at three intervals a day, that spread is worth 1,010% APR. That number is real arithmetic on real feed data. It is also not money anyone is actually making.
Why the headline number is fake
AGPU is quoted on only 4 of the 7 exchanges we track, and it doesn't appear at all in our own open-interest tracker's 24-coin list -- the set of pairs liquid enough that we bother tracking their OI. A funding rate that different between venues on a thin market usually means one of two things: the contracts aren't fungible enough to actually hedge against each other at size (different mark-price methodologies, different liquidation mechanics), or there simply isn't enough depth on one leg to get in or out without the fee you save in funding being eaten by slippage on the way in. Either way, the spread is a symptom of a market too small to arbitrage, not an opportunity.
The one that's actually real: ATOM, OKX vs Gate.io
Restricting the same scan to the 24 coins on our open-interest list -- the ones we track because they trade in real size on every major venue -- the widest gap is ATOM: OKX at -0.0391% per 8h interval, Gate.io at +0.0100%. Funding sign tells you who gets paid: negative means shorts pay longs, positive means longs pay shorts. So on OKX, longs are being paid 0.0391% every interval; on Gate.io, shorts are being paid 0.0100% every interval.
| Exchange | Funding / 8h | Who gets paid |
|---|---|---|
| OKX | -0.0391% | Longs (you, if long here) |
| Gate.io | +0.0100% | Shorts (you, if short here) |
| Combined, delta-neutral | 0.0491% / 8h | You, both sides |
Go long ATOM-perp on OKX and short the same notional on Gate.io, and price risk cancels -- you collect both payments at once: 0.0391% + 0.0100% = 0.0491% every 8 hours. Annualized at three intervals a day, 365 days: 53.8% APR. That's the number our funding rate arbitrage calculator would show you for this pair right now, and it's on two exchanges most traders here already have accounts on.
What it actually costs to put on
Opening both legs and later closing both is 4 fills. At the standard taker rate both OKX and Gate.io charge -- 0.05% per fill, per our own fee comparison data -- that's 0.20% round-trip in fees alone, before either leg pays or collects a cent of funding. Dividing the fee cost by the per-interval funding income: 0.20% Γ· 0.0491% β 4.07 intervals, or about 1.4 days, just to break even on fees. Hold it through one funding payment and you're still underwater. Hold it past day two and the 53.8% annualized rate starts actually accruing as profit, interval by interval, for as long as the gap persists.
And "for as long as the gap persists" is the real caveat, not a footnote. Funding resets every interval based on the live premium between perp and spot on each venue -- it is not a locked-in yield. 53.8% is what today's snapshot pays if the gap holds; it can close, narrow, or flip within the next interval, in which case you're just holding a flat, fee-paid position with no edge until the next gap opens somewhere else. Two-exchange execution also means moving margin between venues, watching both legs for liquidation risk independently, and eating any transfer or withdrawal delay if you need to unwind fast.
Where to check this yourself
This snapshot will be stale within hours -- funding rates move every interval and the widest gap today won't be the widest gap tomorrow. Our funding rate arbitrage screener reads the exact same live feed we used for this post, so the honest way to use this article is as a method, not a standing recommendation: check the screener, filter for coins your target exchanges both carry in real size, and run the gap through the arbitrage calculator with your own fee tier before sizing anything.
