Everyone knows exchanges charge fees. Fewer people do the math on what those fees actually cost over a year of trading. The numbers matter β€” not because any single trade feels expensive, but because the cumulative drag compounds silently across hundreds of round trips.

Here are the five main futures exchanges and what their standard Tier-0 taker fees cost across 1,000 round-trip trades at $1,000 notional (e.g., $100 collateral at 10x).

The rate table (Tier-0, perpetual futures, July 2026)

ExchangeTaker feeMaker feeFee per $1k notional RT1,000 trades total
OKX β†—0.050%0.020%$1.00$1,000
Binance β†—0.050%0.020%$1.00$1,000
Bybit β†—0.055%0.020%$1.10$1,100
KuCoin β†—0.060%0.020%$1.20$1,200
Bitget0.060%0.020%$1.20$1,200

Round trip = open + close, both taker. $1,000 notional = $100 collateral Γ— 10x leverage.

The gap between cheapest and most expensive at this volume is $200 β€” real money for any active trader, paid purely for choosing a different exchange.

Why fees are charged on notional, not margin

This is the part that surprises people. The fee isn't charged on your collateral. It's charged on your notional position size β€” collateral multiplied by leverage.

$100 at 10x controls $1,000 of notional. At 0.055% taker, you pay $1,000 Γ— 0.00055 = $0.55 on the way in, and another $0.55 on the way out. Total: $1.10 per round trip.

That's 1.1% of your margin on a single trade before price moves at all. If you're scalping for 0.5–1% profits, the fee alone takes your entire target on the losing half of your trades.

Scale it up: what active traders pay per year

An active futures trader running 5 round trips a day, $100 collateral, 10x leverage:

ExchangeDaily feesMonthly feesAnnual fees
OKX / Binance$5.00$152$1,825
Bybit$5.50$167$2,008
KuCoin / Bitget$6.00$183$2,190

That's $365/year difference between the cheapest and most expensive at this frequency β€” purely from which exchange you use, with everything else identical.

The modifier that changes everything: maker vs taker

All five exchanges charge 0.020% maker β€” less than half their taker rates. Limit orders that get posted to the order book (and rest there until filled) pay maker fees. Market orders that execute immediately pay taker.

Switching entirely to limit orders cuts the fee bill roughly in half on every exchange. The catch: limit orders don't always fill when you need them to. Scalpers chasing momentum can't wait for fills. But swing traders and anyone with patience can often post limits and get maker rates most of the time.

StrategyEffective rate1,000 trades @ $1k notional
All taker (market orders)0.050–0.060%$1,000–$1,200
50/50 taker/maker0.035–0.040%$700–$800
All maker (limit orders)0.020%$400

The all-maker scenario pays 60% less than all-taker. The exchange choice matters less than the order type choice β€” but both matter.

Binance BNB discount: -10%

Binance lets you pay trading fees in BNB at a 10% discount. At the standard 0.05% rate that's 0.045% effective taker. This requires holding BNB and manually enabling the discount in settings. It also means you're exposed to BNB price risk on the tokens you hold. At high trading volume the saving is real β€” at $1,000 monthly in fees it's $100 back. At low volume the BNB holding adds complexity for minimal gain.

The honest picture: fees aren't your biggest cost

Fees are the most visible trading cost. They're not the largest. Funding on overnight perp positions, spread on market orders in illiquid pairs, and slippage on large trades all compound on top. The true trade cost calculator adds all four together β€” the exchange fee is typically 30–50% of the real round-trip cost once everything is included.

The point isn't that fees don't matter. It's that obsessing about the 0.005% gap between exchanges while ignoring funding and slippage is optimizing the wrong thing. But given two otherwise equal options, the math above shows the cheaper exchange is worth using.
